Given the variety of Irish weather, and the unpredictability of said variety, photography can be a godsend. Painting en plein air is lovely when you can do it, but I have been caught in rain showers many times. You really need to bring a small marquee-type set-up to put over yourself and your stuff, and be prepared to wait it out until the rain stops.
However, taking a photo is handy, what with the automatic viewfinder.
