Photo: Clints and Grykes on the beach at Spanish Point.

Clints and grykes refer to the grooves between the rocks in the Burren. I'm not sure why they form - possibly water erosion has something to do with it, but on land the clints and grykes are great places for all sorts of surpising flower species to settle and thrive. Mediterranean species and even sub-tropical species have been known to thrive here beside Alpine species! And this is why you're not supposed to go picking flowers in the Burren.
